Life

Taking a quick break from my Rome posts to update on what has been going on in life. It will mainly be a photo dump of what I have been doing.

My suburb has a weekend carnival with local vendors and eats that is my favorite weekend of the summer. I live for this weekend and all the fun kid events, local eats, parade, fireworks, and just enjoying myself without stressing if a kid acts up Dan can easily take them home since we live less than 10 min away from the event. It is like a mini state fair.

At this event you buy a “button” for $5 and it includes all these free kids events. This was like build a bear but build your own stuff animal. It is a different animal each year and this year it was a raccoon.
The kids loved doing this event! My oldest aged out of doing the kids events so he was at the carnival part with his friends.
Build your ice cream lego event. It is amazing how they get local businesses to sponsor each event so kids can really enjoy it.
Fun carnival rides
Love that it was just the 2 of them
After the band, they had amazing fireworks
My setup for the parade on Sunday. I went there at 7am to get good seats for 11am parade.

Speaking of state fair, I went to the MN State Fair and it was amazing! I went once with some friends to watch the TLC and Shaggy show, once with my middle son for a mommy and him day, and once with my oldest and family that was visiting from out of town. I was very apprehensive going with the Delta variant and how scary it is sounding but I did just get my results and my kids results and we all tested negative from Covid.

It is a relief and in retrospect I am happy I went, especially with my 5 year old. We went on a Friday when it was drizzling and got there at 830am. The fair was surprisingly empty and we had no lines for any food or ride. He called it the best day and now wants to make it a yearly tradition. I sometimes worry taking him out to places since he is 5 years old and panic at thinking he will be a handful but it was one of those perfect days. He was dressed in all his rain gear, no stroller or wagon for the first time and was just so pleasant to be around. He appreciated it so much and wasted none of the food! He ate and drank everything he asked for and my favorite was seeing his smile petting the cows and lambs at the birth center.

Bacon on a stick
This was a delicious fish taco
White wine flight
The “naughty biscuit” it had pull pork in it but it wasn’t that good
Cotton Candy Champagne drink from the Speakeasy
Our seats! Not the best but not the worst
A quick break for some Sweet Martha cookies
Fireworks to end the show
This is when I took my 5 year old, he wanted a chicken taco to start off
Then French Fries, these are literally the BEST!!! I am so happy I dressed him appropriately. He was warm and dry all day and I think that helped in how happy he was throughout the day.
We took the SkyRide
Some yummy cheese curds
Pork Chop on a stick
This was on Saturday and it was perfect weather! I loved this shirt I found online and it was perfect for the fair.
Another sky ride
More cookies

Random pictures from the summer

I already forgot the name of this restaurant but don’t think I would be going again
My tacos weren’t the best
Weekly popcorn pickup for me and the kids
Weekly Cafe Latte date with my oldest. He likes the food but really likes going there for the desserts.
Nature preserve fun
This is a really neat preserve with sand and water in the summer. The kids all build bridges and use their imagination. I packed lunch that day and we had a nice picnic with friends
We had the splash pad to ourselves a lot this summer, it was amazing!!
Random ice cream dates with Dan
Already starting my fall crafts for the kids
Visits to the Children’s Museum
Costco has their Lego Advent Calendars out!! I had to get all of them for me and the kids.
Fall crafts for my MOMS Club party
Took the baby to go apple picking
This tractor slide setup was really neat
I had just wiped his table and gave him fruit snacks for an after lunch treat when he fell asleep. I decided to take him home for a nap so we never made it apple picking LOLOL but he loved the playground
A yummy drink that tastes just like my favorite Mexican candy

My next posts will be wrapping up my amazing Rome trip and then back to life as normal. I am so excited for all the fun fall events I have planned for the kids and hope to share some on here too.

Rome Day 5

OMG, so sorry for the delay in posting. My kids start school at the end of August so of course everything I have been begging them to do the whole summer they decide they want to do it all now and hang out with all of their friends. Even the baby has been having playdates!!!

Anyways, this was the day of our day trip and it was my very favorite day of our trip. I mentioned before how much I love the big cheesy tours with the big bus and hoards of people well I must admit Dan was right. Going on a private tour was amazing! We had originally booked a private tour to Pompeii and the Amalfi coast with the max people being 6, but this got cancelled the week before we were suppose to leave. I was really sad because I loved Pompeii last time we went and now they had new findings I wanted to see, but I also knew the risk of cancellation with the pandemic and not a lot of tourists so I could only be disappointed and not mad. I was also grateful they cancelled a week before and not the night before so we could look for something else. Dan right away went looking for a new tour and he found one to Florence and Pisa, we had been to Florence before but not Pisa so we booked it. We both swore not to get sad if it got cancelled since it was so last minute but I knew Dan was excited and I was cautious on getting excited.

The tour company had been in touch with Dan and confirmed we were still all good and the day before our tour guide called our hotel to confirm they were picking us up at 6:45am. Since this was the first private day trip we had taken where they picked us up at the hotel I thought that was really nice of them. This also alerted the hotel we wouldn’t be there for breakfast and since we had already paid for our hotel and breakfast was included they told us they would pack us a breakfast picnic! Wow! I never even knew that was a thing! I was so worried I was going to be hungry because breakfast is my favorite meal of the day and I love a good coffee but here they were going to provide us with a small meal and coffee! Ahhh! I was so excited the night before and even Dan said “finally, you are excited.” I didn’t want to be disappointed so I tried not to be excited but with them confirming and calling our hotel I was so relieved that I could look forward to the day trip.

They picked us up right on time and it ended up being only me and Dan!! AHHHH, I was so grateful right off the bat that they didn’t cancel and couldn’t believe no one else was joining us. Our tour guide Giovanni and our driver Roberto were AMAZING!! I cannot say enough nice things about them. Giovanni provided so much knowledge and tidbits and was just so much fun! Roberto was always punctual everywhere and I loved that with both of them they were always where they said they were going to be, I never had to look for them or worry I might be left behind. It was incredible to have them show us these cities.

Ok, so back to the beginning, they pick us up, they let us eat our breakfast in the car which was a croissant, some cookies, cheese and the hotel gave us a to go coffee, water bottles, and juice (loved this) and we had a 2 hour drive to our first stop which was a gas station that sold coffee and pastries. I really liked this stop and it reminded of our day trip to Pompeii which was very similar so I think all rest stops are gas stations with a coffee shop and pastries. Anyways, after this we had one more bathroom break before we got to Pisa which was really smart because once there the line to the bathroom was long.

We get to the Pisa area and our tour guide goes in to get tickets while we take some pictures and wait for him. A couple of minutes later he comes out and we go into the church there and look around and then he lets us take some pictures of the Pisa. He told us where to meet him and he let us walk around for 30 min and gift shop and take as many pictures to our hearts content. It is funny because I used to hate getting the cheesy souvenirs like the t-shirts and the ridiculous magnets and toys but my kids LOVE them! I can’t blame them because I can see their appeal with the bright colors and cute characters so I got the 2 youngest ones a Snoopy t-shirt with Snoopy holding up the Pisa (they have been wearing these shirts at least twice a week, they just love them so much for some reason lolol,) and my oldest a pin of the Pisa he can put on his baseball caps.

Obviously, we had to do every single cheesy over the top pose. I saved the rest for my memories and just will post these lolol

After we saw the Pisa, we met up Giovanni and Roberto and the drive to Florence began. It was really close and we parked and ate lunch at a yummy restaurant. After we had lunch we got to check out the famous leather market in Florence. I bought a couple of scarves for me and my mom and more pins for my oldest.

I still drool thinking of this amazing clam pasta. I need it in my life again.
Leather market

We then met up with a local guide and we set off to the Accademia Gallery. I was really excited to see the Michelangelo’s David again and couldn’t believe how empty it was inside! I was really excited since we were with tour guides it was super fast to get tickets and we got to skip the line outside.

Hi old friend!

It was as beautiful and magnificent as I remembered! After our tour guide explained some things about what was inside and told us the history and stories, him and Giovanni gave us about 20 min to freely roam inside and take more pictures. I really loved how much time they gave us to see places and loved that along with a private tour they also took some great pictures of us!

Like is this real? I got a full shot of us in front of the David. Last time I couldn’t even get a selfie without someone in it.
I was so happy to see him again
What an amazing sculpture

We then walked to Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore and took lots of pictures in front. Dan and I were lucky and went inside last time and walked up so it wasn’t a priority to go up again and enjoyed just see it from the outside and learning its history.

We took a million kissing photos on this trip but will only post this one lolol

After that we walked to the Palazzo Vecchio and saw more beautiful sculptures and Dan was in heaven! He just loves sculptures so again after some talking and learning with the tour guides they let us walk around and take more pictures. To get inside this little gallery we had to get our temperature taken and masks were required. The line was short only 3 people in front of us and it was so nice to see everything up close.

Afterwards we got some gelato and said goodbye to our Florence tour guide and Giovanni walked us back to meet up with Roberto. After our busy morning it felt like heaven to sit in an AC car lolol.

Bridges galore
I was hot and tired by this point so my smile is awkward, eek.
So good

We made one final stop to see the beautiful view of Florence one last time and then we got driven back to Rome. It was all so beautiful and a wonderful tour. I did not think I would like it just being me and Dan but with the times we are in now I really enjoyed myself.

Good bye until we meet again friend!
We came back and went to a dinner nearby and the only picture I took was of our desserts lolol

Rome Day 4

On this day (Wednesday) we had nothing planned in the daytime so as we were getting ready Dan looked up what to do. He found The Trevi Fountain Underground tour and booked it. We had no idea what it was but since we had nothing going on we figured out why not? It was ok and underwhelming. If you do this tour definitely get the audio guide. This isn’t directly underneath the Trevi fountain and a couple of blocks away. They had really neat artifacts and the whole thing took about 25-30 minutes. I wouldn’t recommend this though unless you are really bored and looking for something to do.

The Underground
It was a nice break from the heat
Not very exciting
Neat pottery and they also had coins and some plates.

We got a quick lunch and it was my least favorite meal of the trip.

My lunch was ok, Dan liked his pizza. I typically love Cacio e Pepe and had it earlier this trip and it was delicious but something was off, maybe the cheese.

We went back to the hotel to get ready for our Vatican Museum Happy Hour Tour. We had done a private Vatican Tour for hours last time we went so this time we just wanted to see the Sistine Chapel and enjoy the Happy Hour. Booking this tour I was fully aware it was in Italian only. I understand some Italian and Dan only wanted to see the Sistine Chapel and eat. He isn’t really big into art but he is the best and always joins me in all my museum adventures. Anyways, we get there and after explaining that we didn’t need English guides or want to separate from the group and knew we wouldn’t understand most of the tour we joined 5 other people in the tour (also adding crazy how small our group was and empty the Vatican was.) The tour ended up being really cool and 3 of the 5 people were from Spain so I got to speak with them in Spanish about our vacation (I love making friends on tours!)

Waiting for our tour to begin!

Right before we got inside the Sistine Chapel they must have added a Modern Art section because we entered a huge room with all Matisse, then I saw some Dali and Monet and I was like wait! I am sad we didn’t get to be inside this section for long because there was art I had never seen before not even in art books and I was confused why it was there and also why it wasn’t out before when we came last time. I was also happy they had decided to display these amazing treasures and I kept flying from one art piece to the next squeezing Dan’s arm and exclaiming “look at this!” It all was too brief but the next display was the Sistine Chapel and we spent about 15 min there. We couldn’t sit because of Covid they blocked that section off but it was still amazing to feast my eyes on it. I was sad because still no pictures are allowed but it is truly magnificent in person.

They always have a ton of sculptures and I love their gardens
Some areas were roped off so you could only see into the room like this one
Such a neat replica of the Pantheon
I often wonder if other countries like Egypt would want this art history back. I know I would because it is a part of their culture or maybe they like sharing and like having people see it that otherwise wouldn’t. I dared not ask in case I offended someone and now live with these thoughts forever.
A lot of ceiling art. Also I was shocked how empty it was because last time I went it was shoulder to shoulder and I couldn’t even get a solo picture let alone a big gap like this, it was wild!
More ceiling art
Dan’s candid of me lolol. I really liked that they now provide these ear headphones to hear our tour guide so he wasn’t shouting and I could hear him clearly. When my ear got too tired I could easily move it to my other ear.
I got way too excited when I saw this Rodin and I knew something great was coming up.
I practically shouted “no way!” when I walked into this room. This Matisse was huge and I love love love Matisse! I immediately asked the tour guide if this was new and he said it was newer and he didn’t like the mixing of modern art and older art so I knew I couldn’t ask him much since he didn’t approve. The four walls had huge Matisse pieces and I was rushed along so I could only get pictures of 2.
This was HUGE!!! I just couldn’t believe this Matisse was here, I went to his museum in Nice and loved it all and was so happy and excited to find him at the Vatican too.
Some Dali!
I love Dali too!

After we saw the Sistine Chapel we were escorted to the Pinecone Courtyard. It was really pretty and while people were leaving we had the whole place to ourselves. Just us, the 2 workers, and security. It was another surreal moment to be alone at the Vatican and it took me awhile to really take it in. I LOVED this Happy Hour! I don’t drink much so 1 glass of wine was perfect for me and Dan also enjoyed his glass of wine and all the delicious food. I was pleasantly surprised how much food we got and how tasty it all was. The 7 of us were separated because of Covid but it was very considerate and we sat at 3 different tables, chatting and enjoying the night. Once we finished we were escorted up to an elevator that looked really fancy inside and made me wonder if the priests and pope got to ride that elevator and then me and Dan took an Uber back to our hotel area.

We ate dinner in the Monti area since it was by our hotel and this was another night of scootering around but not so late because we had a day trip planned for the next day. We had to wake up at 5:30am to get ready so we came back to the hotel around 11pm.

We were alone in this huge courtyard!
Hi Dan! Always with my tote lolol
Loved this rice and couscous
Honestly, this was very tasty and loved the variety
Cheers to us!
Our yummy fruit cup dessert

If we ever come back I would book this same Happy Hour Tour but this time choose to meet them at the courtyard at the designated time and spend my whole time in the Modern Art section and Sistine Chapel. I was surprised when Dan sort of understood what the guide was saying and would turn to me to confirm it. I was also excited when Dan would ask me to take pictures of him and the million sculptures we saw. I often forget that while Dan doesn’t love paintings, he loves sculptures and will always appreciate them.

Rome Day 3

We stayed out pretty late the night before so the next morning I was grateful we didn’t have anything until 11am. I had booked us a tour of the Catacombe San Callisto and I was super excited to go. I had been to the catacombs in Paris but these were very different. Pictures were not allowed inside so I only got one of me in front. It was a nice Christian Pilgrimage and it was neat to see how they buried people a long time ago. No skulls or bodies were seen but a lot of history shared. I am always surprised how much history is preserved and how neat it must have been to be the archaeologists that first got to explore it.

Afterwards, we got lunch and we had a bike tour scheduled for 3pm to bike the Appian Way. I love Rick Steves and one of his things to do in Rome is bike this route so I had to do it. We scheduled our tour with Bici Baci and I was delighted when I saw Sarah, our tour guide from 7 years ago that took us around Rome there! She, of course, didn’t remember us but I remembered her so well and was happy to see her still there and loving what she does. Sadly, she was not our tour guide and for the life of me I can’t remember our tour guide’s name but he was very nice and took lots of pictures of me and Dan. I was shocked the tour ended up being only me and Dan for English speaking and the one Sarah led was in Dutch and had like 15 people. I was even more shocked and so grateful they didn’t cancel on us. It was an amazing treat to have a private tour and not pay the private tour price.

Our tour begins!
This is the Porta San Sebastiano gate. It was neat learning the history and it was the main route for military supplies and trading goods.
Drinking from the fountain like a Roman. I was so grateful our tour guide made lots of stops at the fountains since our bikes didn’t have any water bottle holders it was so nice of him to think of us.
I loved this path and these trees were just beautiful!
Hey! We were here earlier lololol
Biking on the dirt rode since it was flatter than the actual road but random rocks would be protruding so you had to keep your eyes peeled.
The path was basically empty the whole way
Loved, that we got our picture taken in front of this Arc and the Colosseum!

This bike tour was so much fun but me and Dan agreed it was also the scariest. Thank goodness we upgraded to the electric bikes for all the hills but the actual Appian Way is so bumpy and no real flat road so any wrong move or swerve on the road and you could go flying off. It was terrifying and thrilling! Our tour guide was so sweet and would wait for us and guide us and tell us what to expect for the road conditions. I love taking bike tours in various cities and now I get why Rick Steves recommends biking this route because this route will always stay in my memory. It was absolutely beautiful! All the villas, the tombstones, and the history all together it felt very surreal. The weather was hot but the breeze from biking felt so nice. I would definitely do this exact tour if I ever make it back to Rome because while it was scary there was something so special about it that I can’t quite articulate. We loved it!

We went back to the hotel to rest a bit, shower, and change. I had asked for restaurant recommendations from our food tour person that cancelled and we had a good list and we decided to go to one of them. It was delicious! This was another night of walking by the Big 3 and random fountains and Piazzas. It is weird how time works in Europe. I can do like a hundred things in a day there and still get up the next day just fine but back home if I do two or three things in a day I am exhausted for hours lolol.

Can you tell it was hot lolol so please excuse our shiny faces
Of course another picture in front go the Trevi Fountain (there will be a million of these)
OMG, this was a rare moment that the police weren’t around and blowing their whistles. After I took Dan’s picture they came and we all had to get off the steps and leave. It was nice to take it in for a few minutes before they came though and to actually sit on the steps. This would be the only night we would be able to sit even though we went every night lolol
A quick selfie

This would also be the first night we rented scooters and were brave enough to travel on the street late at night on them. We didn’t dare try to navigate the roads on a scooter during the day but at night if we saw a Lime or Bird scooter we would rent them and head to the Colosseum then to our hotel. It was this night that it really hit me that we were in Rome, the eternal city. As we stayed out late, talking, laughing, and riding around I couldn’t help but feel so happy and “blessed” that I was able to take this trip. I even pinched myself while at a red light thinking this was a dream. I remembered exactly why I love traveling, why I love Rome so much, and how special this trip was to take with Dan. We got back to the hotel, showered, and stayed up talking some more about what we loved about the day. Sometimes, I find it hard to believe I can still find things to talk about to Dan when I am literally with him 24/7 but we both surprise each other with a different memory or we took a picture of something the other missed and this night we stayed up talking about our bike and scooter rides and how much we loved both.

Rome Day 2

One of the many reasons I really loved this trip was because we got to spend so much time in my favorite city. I bought tickets for everything beforehand and booked the tours I wanted, but still left lots of time to just wander and eat wherever.

Our first full day in the eternal city (Monday) I only booked a food tour at 6pm in the Jewish Quarter area (same one we did years ago, I loved it then so I wanted to do it again.) This left the whole day open. We slept in and got breakfast, took our time getting ready, and first stop was seeing the Colosseum and Roman Forum.

We loved our breakfast every morning!

We bought tickets to go inside the day time for that Friday and also booked a night time underground tour that Saturday so I only wanted to feast my eyes on sites and then walk around.

Last time I tried to take a picture in front of this arc it was swarmed!!

But, as soon as we got there we were hounded by people asking if we bought tickets, if we wanted a tour, it was beyond annoying. I couldn’t believe they let them harass people like that! They look legitimate too with a lanyard and if you said you did have a ticket they would direct you to the gate, but if you didn’t they would be so sneaky about it and try to get you to buy it from them.

Dan wanted to go inside the Roman Forum and started to talking to one of the people (yes, I wanted to kill him) and they tried charging him 20 Euros to just get inside the Forum. That was crazy to me and I immediately said no and pulled Dan away but when the guy followed us, I snapped and said we would not be paying 20 Euros to go inside when it cost 18 Euros to go inside all three, the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill and there wasn’t even an option to just go inside the Forum so it was ridiculous and a rip off. I even checked the website and there were still tickets from 2pm to later so if Dan really wanted to go inside I could have easily bought tickets right then and there. The guy left shortly after and I was finally able to breathe.

I don’t mind the people trying to sell water for 1 Euro because honestly I sometimes need a water and too lazy to go into a convenience store and they also charge 1 Euro so this just saves me time, but the people hounding back to back asking if I have a ticket drove me nuts.

Anyways, I took some pictures and walked around the outside. I like scoping out the area and knowing where I have to go on the day of tours so I liked seeing where I had to enter and what to do. Everything is online now because of the pandemic so I was very happy I booked everything I wanted to see and do beforehand.

Last time we were here a lot of the outside of the Colosseum was under scaffolding so it was so nice to see it in all of its glory and beauty.
It was getting hot but I just loved walking and seeing the ruins. It was crazy to see how empty the city was and how many pictures I could take without many people in the background.
Always time for a selfie
I love these rows of columns you can find everyone.

After visiting the Colosseum we walked over and went to see the Bocca della Verità. Logan loves this thing and gets a kick out of seeing the replica they made for a restaurant here in St Paul so of course we had to visit it and take pictures to send them to him. I also like seeing it because it reminds me of the movie Roman Holiday. We both stuck our hands in and neither one of us lost a hand so that’s good lolol.

Dan passed the lying test lololol
I even passed haha

After this we took an Uber to the Spanish Steps. It was in the high 80s/low 90s so as much I love walking it was too hot for all that.

Again, so empty compared to last time we were at the Spanish Steps. I think I accidentally stepped on someone’s hand last time because it was so crowed and I couldn’t see in front or below me. This fountain was also under scaffolding last time we were here so I loved seeing it without it. The Police were there all day and night and would blow their whistles if they saw you sitting or lingering too long

I have loved the Romantic poet writers, Keats, Shelly, and others since high school. I can still remember not having a boyfriend but writing my best friends notes and postcards quoting their beautiful poems and sharing my love. Last time when we came to Rome I did not get to go into the museum that is located right next to the Spanish Steps but I made sure to go inside this time. I was so excited and in awe of seeing so many original manuscripts and paintings that I didn’t take any pictures. I am kicking myself now but this is exactly why I would make a terrible real blogger, I get way too excited and just read and flint from one room to the next in all my excitement. We were the only ones inside and I could not stop saying “omg, Dan look at this!” They not only had Byron and Keats, but they had stuff from other poets too and I even saw some stuff from another favorite Oscar Wilde! I was practically buzzing and could not believe how much stuff they had. When I was done, we visited the gift shop and I bought a tote and a couple of postcards to mail to my high school friends that all knew about my love of these poets. If you love poetry you definitely need to check this museum out, it was surprisingly really good and I still cannot believe I saw some original manuscripts!

One of my favorite places I visited this trip. I love “LOVE” and being here and able to go inside meant so much to me.

We then walked by the Trevi fountain (yes, one of a million times we did one this trip) and then walked over to go inside the Pantheon. It is free to go inside but on Saturday and Sunday they do require you to make a reservation. You can scan their QR code by the front and pick a time. This was on Monday so we just stood in line. I thankfully had bought a scarf earlier that day and had to wrap my shoulders which was fine but don’t forget to get into the churches your shoulders must always be covered. They took our temperature and we went in. I loved going inside and this would be one of many times we went in. Again, I did not take pictures, but I did a different day so I will post those then, I was just so excited and enjoyed walking around in peace and just looking.

I wanted a little snack afterwards and went to Tazza D’Oro to get my favorite Grannita. It is like slushie coffee with yummy cream. I fell in love with this last time we came and it is conveniently located kiddie corner of the Pantheon. Dan who isn’t really a sweets person even loves this so we got this multiple times during our trip.

Love the Grannitas here, so good.

We still had energy so we walked over to Piazza Navona. I still remember as a teenager watching that Sophia Loren movie Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow and loving her apartment view of this amazing fountain!

I always bring a tote bag to carry my fan, hat, umbrella, water bottle, wipes, and random souvenirs I buy throughout the day. We take turns carrying it, but Dan carried it most of the trip lolol

We, of course, got hungry and ate right in front of the fountain and I must admit I didn’t mind these tourist traps. It was nice seeing all the people and vendors. I especially liked how they would run once they saw the saw police. I wonder if they had a signal or something because they always left right before the police came and wrapped all the goods up so fast.

Our beautiful view of the fountain and people.
Lots of wine was drank during this trip and they were all so good.
We shared every lunch and they were all delicious!

Later that night we had our food tour at 6pm. I was sad that at 6:05pm they texted to cancel because not enough people signed up. I was really annoyed they cancelled so late because then we could have made other plans but we rescheduled for Sunday with a promise they wouldn’t cancel again.

In front of the Piazza Mattei aka Turtle Fountain
Tour cancelled but that’s life, can’t really dwell on the bad so off we went.

We decided to again walk by the Big 3, but then it started to rain and I forgot my umbrella since I thought we would be inside various places so we chose a place on the path between the Trevi Fountain and Pantheon. It was actually really good and I loved that we got to see Rome in the rain. This reminded a lot of Paris, just sitting in a cafe and enjoying the city in my favorite weather.

Dan liked this beer and the bottle.
I loved watching the rain and being under the cover of it. It didn’t last long but seeing Rome in rain was everything!
More food pictures, I promise not to post that many (maybe)
It was watermelon and cantaloupe season so everywhere we went they offered a fresh fruit plate of it.

It stopped raining so we again walked by the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. For as many times I walked this path it never got old lololol. I just couldn’t believe I was Rome and enjoyed every minute. We got gelato and sat in front of the fountain to people watch and then walked off our dinner back to the hotel. It was an amazing first full day in Rome!

Rome Day 1

I am finally back from my trip and it was AMAZING!!! I didn’t bring my laptop when I went and I don’t really like typing on my phone so I decided to just wait until I got home to write about everything.

We left last Saturday July 17 around 10am from the Minneapolis St Paul Airport. Our flight was at 1pm and we got there with plenty of time to spare. Our gate was far but I am happy we left early and had a chance to eat at a sit down restaurant. Everything was on time and seemingly well until we got on the plane. The pilot said there was balancing issues, too many people with heavy luggages. The crew had to move around people on the plane and move around luggages. We had a 3 hour layover at JFK so I wasn’t too worried about time. Well I was wrong lololol, 3 hours on the plane on the tarmac, they decided to take off people’s luggage, they promised us they were only removing people’s luggage that was going to JFK and leaving the international luggage on the plane. I immediately knew that wasn’t going to be the case because all the heavy luggage was more than likely people traveling abroad. I did what I do best in a panic and just prayed we would make our flight to Rome and hopefully have our luggage. I was comforted by the idea that since we got there so early our luggage would be further back and hopefully not picked to be taken off. We finally got the ok to take off and we were all so excited when the pilot said, “more bad news, air traffic control has decided to keep all planes from going to JFK because of the weather and not enough workers to land us.” AHHH, sadness all around when a minute later the pilot said wait! We got the ok to take off and he booked it out of there before they could change their mind. During our 2 hour flight we got to know the people around us, a lot were going to Athens, Venice, Milan, some Rome, and various other cities across the world. The most interesting, was a family behind us, they had 2 sons and one was chosen to play soccer on a national team of like 20 something kids across USA to play against the Greece team. The kids were so cute and were playing a soccer game and they kept naming players and that peaked my interest and I began talking to them and that’s how I found out about their cool trip.

We were just so happy to make our last flight to Rome

Anyways, we get to JKF and we had 20 min to make our Rome flight, it was the only Rome flight of the day left so I prayed and hoped we would make it. We logged into the Delta app and find out our flight was delayed by an hour!!! I have never been so happy for a delay in my life until this moment lolol. Still cutting it close but it gave us hope! We land, almost everyone with connecting flights missed except a handful of others. I hate how big JFK is but I was happy we landed in Terminal 4 and our next flight was there like 30 gates away. I don’t work out but for some reason if in danger I can always run a good steady pace to save my life and even beat Dan to the gate! We get there and by the grace of God they just started boarding, we get our temperatures taken (they didn’t check our CDC card or really anything,) and get on board. Once on the flight, I keep checking the Delta app to see if our luggage made it (I love their app!) and right before they told us to put our devices on airplane mode I see both our luggages are checked in!!! I do a happy dance and can finally relax.

The flight there felt fast and my only complaint was the airplane food has gone down hill. I forgot to take pictures but it was meh at best. I normally love hospital and airplane food and never really saw why people complained but no bread or salad and just the main dish which was pasta or chicken, a very small side, and a little ice cream. I miss their bigger portions and their bread and butter so much! We made it and once in Italy we flew right through customs. They didn’t ask for our CDC cards and just took our temperatures and stamped our passport and then we picked up our luggage and went to find a taxi.

I didn’t like how as soon as we left the airport there were like 40 people yelling if we needed a ride, I like following the rules and don’t ever take up random rides so we had to shove our way through to the legitimate taxi stand and got a taxi right away. I couldn’t help but think how crazy that was because there is still a pandemic around and no one moved out of the way and I hugged my backpack close and used my luggage as a shield to make my way through. I was thankful that we each only had 2 pieces of luggage, our back packs and big suitcase.

We made it to the hotel, which is the same one we stayed at last time. Our room was ready so we went and showered and brushed right away (it was around 2pm.) When we were done, we called an Uber to go to the Pantheon (this service didn’t exist last time we were there so it was nice they finally had it there) and ate lunch. Last time we avoided the tourists traps but this trip I wanted a lot of people watching since I felt like I have been missing just looking at people and being around people that it felt so nice to be surrounded by them.

A cute welcome gift!
Dan isn’t the best picture taker but I am just happy this one isn’t blurry lololol
Yes, we ate at the tourist traps but loved the action in front of the Pantheon

After lunch we got gelato and headed to the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. I call the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps the Big 3 since they are 3 big attractions all near each other and so easy to get to by foot.

We ate so much gelato and I am missing it so much
Of course a selfie in front of the Trevi fountain

After some walking around and sight seeing, we got dinner. We were so exhausted but happy we made it until 8:30pm at night so we could get on some normal schedule for the next day of full day of activities.

Some snaps from my IG stories

I loved our first day in Rome and noticed it wasn’t as crowded as last time we were there. This would be both good and bad for the rest of the trip, but I will break it down day by day and explain in other posts.

Packing Part #1

We leave for Italy this weekend and like always I leave my packing until the last minute. I make a mental list in my head and pick out outfits mentally but this time Dan said to actually lay out my outfits. He laid everything out already and took pictures of his daily outfits but I like to just throw on whatever I feel like that day. I feel bad stressing him out because of my lack of packing when he is all done so here is my effort to pack. I sweat a lot and the main downside of traveling in the summer it is so hot but it is the only time we can really travel. Having 3 kids I don’t want them to miss school during the school year so summer is the only time we can go to Europe and not feel like the kids are missing anything important. Thankfully, I have an awesome mom that is flying in and watching the kids and I have great friends who have scheduled playdates and car pool rides so the kids will still get to attend their camps and activities.

Anyways, back to packing. I am packing a lot of dresses and a couple pair of shorts and 1 pair of pants. For some reason I always end of regretting not packing a pair of pants so I am packing one pair. I am also packing 3 pairs of shoes and buying a new pair in Italy. I love the Superga brand so I want to make sure I buy my newest pair there in hopes they have more variety than here. My dad always said to only wear shoes you can run away in so I am packing some slip on sandals, wedge heels, and my Plae slip on sneakers. I sometimes wish I was more comfortable just doing my laundry in a foreign country and I have done it before but I found it to be a little bit of a hassle getting the soap and finding a Laundromat and then waiting for the clothes to be done when I could be sight seeing instead. I also don’t want to pay extra for the hotel to do it so my suitcase will be filled to the brim. I always pack another bag to put clothes in when I am heading home as another carry on so I am not too worried about not having room for my souvenirs.

Ever since I got my kids Plae shoes I have been obsessed with them too. They raved about them and I finally got a pink pair last year and they are my most comfortable and worn pair! I saw these gold ones and figured I would get them for the trip and have broken them in the past month around the house and are super comfortable now too. .
Can you tell pink is my favorite color?

These are the finalists! I am going to leave about a quarter of these outfits but I like hanging them up to see what I really like and what I will wear. I will probably add and take away stuff throughout the week and then pack on Friday night. I have had great luck in always packing the exact outfits I need so I am not too worried about over packing and the only thing I am debating is bringing both hats or just one.

It is funny that most of my outfits are from Amazon, Target, and H&M. I have become real boring as I get older and in reality mainly get my clothes from Costco and Amazon. Now that I can return clothes at stores for free on Amazon I see myself buying from there more and more. I really just like to be super comfortable and since I don’t feel as cute as I did when I was younger loose fitting stuff is right up my alley. Once I am not running around with the kids so much I do plan to shop more locally and buy more from small shops. Until then though, easy, quick fashion is what works.

Hoping to narrow down my trip outfits soon so I can move on to my toiletries. I love packing those and my makeup because they are easy lolol.

Memories #4 (Travel)

We have been very fortunate to have travelled to a lot of great places so of course I would have some travel stories. I will start off with my most memorable/odd ones first.

-My first one starts off in Paris 2019, we went with a group of friends during Bastille Day celebrations and it was epic!!! This story though is about me and Dan and a sight seeing day. Dan wanted to see the stadium and take a tour of where Paris St Germain plays, Parc des Princes and I wanted to go to Père Lachaise Cemetery to see where a lot of the great artists were buried. They were semi close to each other and really easy to get to via the train so we decided to start off going to Parc des Princes. We get to the train station and the ones we had been to before always had an attendant but this time the box was empty where they would be, ok no biggie I was going to google where to get off then figure out how much we needed to add to a train card. A guy suddenly pops out of nowhere with a train tag on and seems legit so he asks us if we need help. I tell him where we want to go and he pushes the buttons and we add our credit card and the tickets print and I put away our credit card away and get our tickets. He then went to help another couple and we walk away as I get all my zippers closed in my purse. I should note when we travel I carry my purse with lots of zippers and put Dan’s wallet in it with our IDs, money, and credit cards. He only ever has his phone on him and I carry everything because I am way more alert and paranoid so I am basically always hugging my purse. Anyways, we go walking down to catch the train the guy had told us to go and this other guy comes and chases us then shows us a police badge. He immediately tells us the guy who helped us is a thief and a known pick pocketer so to check if we have all of our possessions. Dan checked and he still had his phone, we only wear our wedding bands when we travel and we both had those on, the guy tells us again to check if we have our money and credit cards, so I hide behind Dan and carefully open my purse and check if the wallet is there with our 2 credit cards and they are and I tell the police officer I have everything. He then asks again if I am sure I have everything and again I say yes and hug my purse tightly. He then runs around the whole train station seemingly looking for this pick pocketer and when we get on the train, me and Dan then start to question who was the real thief. They both seemed legit and were nice enough but one of them was definitely fake or were they both working together? It is like what came first the chicken or the egg story, whenever I bring it up me and Dan laugh about it and we both create different theories. In fact today, I told Dan it was the police officer, he asked me way too many times to check if I had everything and Dan still thinks it was the attendant since he just popped up out of nowhere. We will never know though, but it did leave us with a good story and thank goodness nothing of ours was taken. We enjoyed our day sight seeing and when we went back to the same train station later in the night neither one was around.

Dan and his love of soccer, he was so giddy to be able to see this stadium even if it was just from the outside

-Next one consists of our first time in Rome we went on a day trip to see Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. It is still my favorite day trip to this day and it was all thanks to our amazing tour guide, Luca. I will never forget first laying eyes on him, we had to meet in a square at like 6am, I am standing there trying to look for a sign or a group of people so I could ask if this was the correct tour, but a guy suddenly bumps into me. He apologizes and I smell him, reeks of alcohol and has a huge busted lip, I was like OMG and asked if he was ok and if he needed anything, he smiles and I see the blood and he is like no I am fine. He asks if I am looking for anything and I say the tour name and he exclaims that’s his tour! The people around us heard him and we all gather around. He tells us to get any snacks from this store in the square and to meet inside the bus that was pulling in. We get snacks and settle in, another tour guide Danielle gets on too. They take roll call and after they count us, Luca starts off by telling us what to expect and where we are going. After he finishes, he tells us to relax because our first coffee break won’t be for awhile and to just sleep. I do and I will never forget how he woke us up, a creepy “WAKEY WAKEY” (Dan wakes me up like this sometimes and it cracks us up in the morning thinking of the sheer creepiness of it because of the tone Luca used.) Anyways, we get out and it is a cute coffee shop so we all get coffees and sweet bread, use restrooms, and there are more tours there too. Luca comes in with his busted lip and sweater wrapped around him real preppy with aviators on and yells at us “ok, 5 min, meet at the bus.” I am waiting for Dan who went to use the restroom at the coffee bar, when another tour group comes in, this man was really upset and screaming in Spanish “where’s the sugar” He had the lisp like Spaniards so I think he was from Spain, but he was getting really upset and kept banging on the counter and yelling. I speak fluent Spanish so I told him “sir, the sugar is right there” He looked over, saw it, broke into a huge smile, and thanked me profusely. I was a little confused why he needed sugar so badly but happy he found it. Dan came out and was like who was that man and I was like I don’t know but he seems to love sugar as much as me so he is my friend. We had to leave so I waved good bye to my sugar friend. We get on the bus and Luca and Danielle tells us more information about Pompeii and what to expect. As we are sitting on the bus, I hear Danielle and Luca talking about the night before and from what I could make out Luca was flirting with some woman and some guy, maybe boyfriend, got mad and they had a fist fight. Apparently, the other guy looked worse with two black eyes so Luca having a busted lip was nothing. I tell Dan and we start creating a wild story about his night to keep us entertained. I can’t remember if we had lunch next or visited Pompeii but either way when we get to lunch, it is at another cute place and our lunch was very good. During lunch, Dan makes eye contact with me and points towards Luca, I follow his gaze and see Luca flirting up a storm with the waitress. Dan and I giggle knowing what happened the night before and now see Luca was a huge flirt. He had the waitress laughing in stitches and lots of touching. We leave and the waitress gives Luca her number. Again, I don’t remember the order if it was lunch first then the sites or the sites then lunch but either way our bus gets divided into 2 groups. Both groups will have their own private tour guide and Danielle would be with one and Luca in the other. I pray we get Luca and so happy we did. Leading up to our official tour guide, Luca told us wild stories of Pompeii and then of the Mafia, it was so entertaining. We get to our guide and Luca offers to the group to be our photographer! It was really nice and I thought for sure they all did that, but I found out later from the other group Danielle did not offer that and Luca took some great pictures of us. When we visited Mount Vesuvius he was again our photographer and took some amazing ones with us in the clouds and told us to pick up some rocks from the volcano since those are the best souvenirs and he was so right! I was sad when our tour ended and wish I had asked for a picture with him. He was just so entertaining, so sweet and nice and I wouldn’t learn about how bad some tour guides could be until later in life and I often think of Luca and me and Dan joke we should have named one of our sons after him because he was just that memorable. He was one of the many reasons we loved Italy and we tried looking for the exact tour to do it again this time around but Dan couldn’t find it. I am hoping I can will the world to stumble upon Luca when I am in Rome and will have my eyes peeled for him.

One of the many pictures Luca took in Pompeii, but I only have this one saved on my computer and the rest are saved on another hard drive

-Speaking of willing the world, this next adventure takes us to Mexico. I went with my best friends to the Yucatan, twice, once for my bachelorette party trip and the other for one of my best friend’s Michelle’s bachelorette trip. On my bachelorette, my friends organized an amazing tour to visit Chichén Itzá, swim in cenotes, and zip line through the jungle. This was an amazing excursion and one I tell everyone to do if they are visiting the Yucatan area. Our driver was Diego and our tour guide was Murux. Diego, was the best driver, sweet, and soft spoken. This was a private tour so it was just us girls and them and when we get together we are all loud and obnoxious so the fact they put up with us was a blessing. When they picked us up at the hotel I noticed Murux kept staring at me, I didn’t think too much of it because when we all get together people for some reason tend to stare and I have yet to figure out why but him staring wasn’t a big deal. He asks us why we are there and my friends tell him I am getting married, he congratulates me and we get into the bus. I sit in the middle and Murux sits next to me. I didn’t think too much of it because I was just going to sleep on the drive. As we first head to Chichén Itzá, he starts telling us his past love life and then looks at me and tells me I look exactly like his lost love Selmie. He couldn’t get over the uncanny resemblance and then asked if I was Mayan, I told him I was Mexican, but I didn’t know my exact ancestry. He claimed he was certain I was Mayan because of my bone structure. Anyway, he starts telling us his childhood and about his past love and I fall asleep. I wake up to him tapping my arm and telling me we are at the first coffee/snack stop. After that we head to Chichén Itzá and it was amazing!! He took a million pictures of us and told us amazing history of the area and of course of the Mayans. We then swam in the cenotes, zip lined through the jungle, and he also took us to see another Mayan ruin Ek’ Balam. Later that night, Cam was looking at the pictures and she noticed he took a bunch of just me. We all had a good laugh and couldn’t believe I looked like his past love. Anyways, fast forward a year later, Michelle decided she wanted to go to the Yucatan again for her bachelorette trip. We plan another excursion but this time we go to Tulum to see those ruins and to swim with the sea turtles. As we are in Tulum, I casually mention wouldn’t it be crazy if we saw Murux here giving a tour? I start looking around and just like magic Murux appears in front of us. We all scream his name and run towards him and our poor tour guide is like what the hell since we basically ditched him. We all hug Murux, ask how Diego is, and take pictures with him. No one could believe we saw him again and it is funny how the world works sometimes. I truly believe if you ask out loud earnestly the world will align itself to make it happen if it can. Both trips were a lot of fun and great memories with my besties.

One of many pictures Murux took of me from a distance lololol but super zoomed in
At Ek’ Balam, it was really neat and we were able to climb this one

-last one for today, this one was in Spain. I love Dali and since we were in Barcelona we looked up a tour to visit Dali’s home and studio in Figueres. Dan managed to find one and booked it. We get to the meeting place and meet our tour guide for the day, Carlos. He somewhat reminded me of Luca, but he wasn’t as nice. Anyways, our first stop was a city named Girona, it was ok and had great history but my main focus and excitement was seeing Dali stuff. Our tour guide Carlos, didn’t really care for the group so he just would drop us off and wait on the bus and then gather us and do a head count. Finally, on our way to Figueres our bus’s AC breaks! It was over 100 degrees at this point and we were all dying inside. We finally make it to the city and Carlos gets us out, points in a general direction and tells us we have 2 hours to explore the city on our own as he will go back to get the bus fixed or bring a whole new bus. We were all lost and confused but whatever, we make the best of it. Thankfully, at this point I have learned to always pack deodorant, an umbrella, snacks, and a water bottle so we were fine. We find Dali’s home and studio and it was everything I had hoped and dreamed it would be!! It filled my imagination with wonder, awe, and beauty, I definitely plan to go back one day. After we finished that museum, we realized we spent all of our time there so we didn’t have a chance to go further into the city, but we sat down for a quick bite before the bus was suppose to come. We walk back to the bus meeting area and we thought we missed the bus since not a lot of people were around but there was another couple and they said they had been there for awhile and never saw Carlos, so we didn’t miss anything. Where we had to wait had no shade so thank goodness I brought my umbrella because it was nearing 120 degrees and it was a blessing to have it while we waited and waited. Another hour goes by and Carlos finally comes back with a new bus and working AC. Our group looks smaller than before and he tells us all to get in because we are late. He counts us like 10 times, mutters in Spanish we are missing 5 people and after sitting and thinking he tells the bus driver to go!!!!!! WHAT?? A lady asks him if the people missing will find a way back and he says he thinks they went on another bus, but there was no other bus!! We all waited in the same area and saw no other bus come or go. The bus pulls away and after we all nag him to make sure they got on a bus so he goes through the list and calls them. They tell him they are still in Figueres and he tells them he will send a bus to pick them up. After he hung up, he never called anyone else! Again, we asked him if he was going to send a bus and he said he will just go back after dropping us off and get them. We tell him to just turn around now because it is so hot no point in making them wait. He insists it is too late to turn around and no where to actually turn around so we head back to Barcelona. He drops us off, no good bye, just get out, and he hopefully headed back to get the missing people. We love comparing Luca and Carlos in our memories and wonder how they are both doing.

Loved everything there
I was and still am obsessed with these Oscar statues and their heels
So creepy, I love it!!
The outside
Dying from the heat but making the best of it lolol

Anyways, I still have more travel stories but they are all random and will be for another day. I am getting so excited for my Rome trip! We only have 1 day trip planned this time around since we don’t want to bounce around too much with the virus still around, but I hope our tour guide will be very entertaining and memorable. It is a smaller group so hopefully no one is too boring. I think this is where me and Dan have different opinions. He loves smaller, more private and intimate tours and I love the big buses and crowds of people. There is just so many people to watch, observe, and learn about and I love talking to everyone and hearing their story and where they came from, whereas Dan likes to just sit and relax and observe. Ahhh, either way, I am counting down the days until we leave and can’t wait!

Travel

For our Anniversary and Dan’s 40th Birthday we will be going to Rome! We have been once before and I am beyond excited to go back. Of all the cities I have been to none have left such an impression on me like Rome. It is a magical place and it is hard to exactly describe what is so amazing about it besides saying everything. I am not a big beach person so I love big cities and I can see why a lot of people could like coast cities or Hawaii or other exotic tropical places but for me Rome has my heart. The people, the culture, the food, the way of life, I mean everything is exactly what I look for when I go on vacation. I love that it is a major city so there it so much to do but there is also something about just enjoying and appreciating everything around you. It is my favorite city to just linger and sit and watch. No one is in a rush and I know I sometimes need that reminder to just sit and relax. I love people watching and I already can’t wait to eat at some of the restaurants we ate at before and discover new ones.

It is funny how a city can leave such an impression. I tend to forget a lot because I just repress the memory or don’t bother to store it in a permanent memory but there are times I dream of walking the streets of Rome, of drinking an espresso at a counter midday, of refilling my water bottle in one of the hundreds of public water fountains, or sitting cooling off in a beautiful church, it all feels so real and like I am still there but then I wake up so sad knowing it wasn’t real. I have been to a lot of countries and cities but nothing stirs my bones or heart like Rome. I hope it is like everything I remember and more. I am so thankful where I am in life to be able to go to all these great cities now and I feel so appreciative to the world around me for making this possible.

A part of me wants to hop all over Italy but another part is happy we are staying in Rome. We will be there over a week and I am having so much fun planning this with Dan. It is funny because typically I plan everything here in Minnesota and Dan occasionally finds new stuff for us but with Rome he has sent me so many links on things he wants to do and has bought tickets for us and is doing most of the planning. I love that, because I get overwhelmed and my requests were just a food tour and Vatican again. I pray I can walk up those steps to the St Peter Basilica because I almost died last time and I am way older now but I am so excited to go there again and see the Vatican Museums.

If there is one thing I want my kids to do as they get older is to travel. Traveling just changes you. It opens you up to so much you didn’t know existed. It makes you appreciate so much and makes you discover yourself. I cannot wait to take the kids abroad and just waiting for Scott to get a little older or maybe just take Dylan and Logan because I know they would love it and I can take them to my favorite spots in each city.

Below are old pictures from our last Rome trip that I will surely be replicating this trip. It is funny, this past winter my closet literally broke and I gave away like 10 huge bags of clothes to the women’s shelter but looking at these pictures I have almost every single outfit still lolol. Whether they still fit or not is another thing but I love that I kept them because they just felt too special to let go and I can see why. I tend to keep all of my travel outfits in hopes to one day pass them down to my granddaughters and they can make me smile by wearing them and maybe one day visiting the city and spot I was at and duplicating my picture. In the meantime, I will try on the clothes and see what fits and maybe bring a shirt or dress back to Rome and see if maybe I can recreate the same picture too.

My favorite poets!!
I am still in shock I got to sit and touch stuff at the Roman Forum. In Paris, I felt like someone was always telling me no for some reason or another even though I do respect art and history and look for signs but in Rome I vividly remember no one telling me no, no one staring me down, and no one following me around making me feel bad because I accidentally got too close to something. Even in this picture I was hovering over the broken column and not really sitting but I have a genuine smile because I was so happy to just relax.

Dan

Preface-I often joke with people that I feel I have lived a thousand lives, between the ages of 18-24 to say I was a hot mess is another severe understatement. I was wild and crazy. I had terrible and toxic relationships. I got cheated on and I cheated. I was on a fast lane of going no where in life. Through it all, I kept telling myself it would get better. It was really my own doing so I had to really stop and focus on myself. I finally snapped after my last loser relationship and steered clear of anything serious for awhile. I read the book The Alchemist and that changed me. I started to really believe that if I wanted something real I had to clean myself up, get prepared, not cheat, and really commit time to whatever came. I prayed and willed the world everyday to bring me someone serious, not some immature boy, I wanted someone I could connect with, someone I could talk to about anything and everything, someone who would listen, someone that would keep me interested, and as I realized that was a lot I was asking, I patiently waited. I knew and felt something was going to come, whether it was good or bad I wasn’t sure but I finally felt strong and ready to welcome it.

I first met him at work. He was tall, dark hair, deep blue eyes, and wore various baseball caps. At first glance he was handsome but nothing out of the ordinary. I first spoke to him at a Chase Sponsored Race that our company participated in and in our section we had drinks and yard games. I noticed he was really good at bags/corn hole, like freakishly good and I was terrible. We were suppose to pair off in teams of two and I wasn’t going to come in last place so without ever saying a word to him before I asked if he wanted to be my partner. He said yes, we briefly spoke, he was really shy and polite. We didn’t come in last and that was nice but we didn’t really get a chance to talk so I just wrote him off as another nice guy at work. I then started to notice him more and more, we both took the Blue Line home and got off the same time. I don’t know why but I would always wait for him to go first since he was in a different section and as soon as I would see him I would log off and go too. I never walked beside him but walked behind him just observing (creep!, was I stalker?) he would get on at Washington and I would walk past that station and get on Jackson because I loved the buildings and looking at the architecture on Dearborn. I don’t think we ever rode the train together but it was nice following him everyday and it was the same routine for months. I mean I was very guarded at this point in my life, 24 years old, heart broken a million times and I vowed never to date another loser again.

During the summer we had summer hours so every Friday we would get off at 2pm and basically as a company hit up the downtown bars and go where the wind took us. I participated sometimes but most of my coworkers were frat guys and really different than me and I was a hipster and enjoyed partying in Wicker Park, Logan Square, and Ukrainian Village. I would hear about the wild Fridays on Monday morning at work and someone would always say how crazy Dan got, but I always found it hard to believe since he was so quiet at work. My friend Rebeca asked me to join her one Friday night so off we went with the Sales team to the Tilted Kilt, as the drinks kept flowing I started to see this Dan that people spoke of, he was talking loudly, laughing, cracking jokes, and was just different. We started talking and I found myself really enjoying his company, we ended up moving to a different bar across town and me, him, and Rebeca shared a cab there and here he was head out the window singing every song off the radio. It was amazing, him and Rebeca singing away and me laughing so hard and wishing I could record them. We made it to the bar but he left to join his other friends not from work and I left to join my hipster friends and that was that. The next day Rebeca called me inviting me out again but at a coworkers house and just when I was about to say no, I heard his laugh, I asked if Dan was there and she was like oh yeah well then yes I am in and on my way to this house. I met up with them and as we are drinking the baseball game was on, in Chicago we have two teams, The Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs. Mostly everyone I know is a Cubs fan, I grew up in the Northside and Wrigley Field is literally 10 min away from my house. I am NOT a Cubs fan, in fact I loathe them and being in the city where everyone loves them it is hard to find White Sox fans so imagine my surprise when I heard Dan laugh at an error the Cubs made and I think no this can’t be he is from the suburbs he must like the Cubs. I casually sat in front of the tv and watched the tv and Dan’s reactions, I noticed he got mad when the Cubs scored and smiled at a call against them. I moved closer to him, casually start talking about sports (side thought, I love love random facts and trivia, I grew up with 3 brothers and a dad so I always needed to know various facts or at least stats for every major sport in America and Mexico, so to talk to someone that equally loves sports and especially my favorite, baseball, is always exciting to meet.) I asked which team was his favorite and he said the Chicago White Sox, AHHHHH! I loved it! I brought up a lot of random players and team happenings and I was shocked that Dan knew everything and in fact more than me. This was the most I heard him speak not drunk and sober and so much all at once. It was thrilling! We spoke about random years of sports, of our favorite White Sox plays and players, where we were when they won the championship, etc. Everyone started to leave for the bars and we left to get dinner, I guess this might be considered a date but we both didn’t really see it as a date since it just happened so spontaneously. We had a quick bite and had some more fun conversation and finding out we had a lot of things in common, which is weird because I am so random and like the most obscure things it is hard to find someone with so many common likes as me. We exchanged numbers and then went off separately to meet our different friend groups. The next day he texted and we ended up texting the day away. I found the courage to admit that I might like him and put myself out there after so many terrible relationships. I texted him if he wanted to go to a White Sox baseball game. He replied yes. The coming week was going to be busy at work but Thursday July 23, 2009 morning came and I texted him if he wanted to play hooky from work and he said yes, so we both came to work, said we weren’t feeling well, met up at the red line train station and headed to the game. We get there and I was too nervous to speak, so when he asked which section he should get I said whatever is great. He ended up picking my favorite section. We drank, we shared a ton of food, we laughed a lot, and we witnessed history. I will never forget this day ever, it was the top of the 7th and Dan asked if I knew what was happening and I just nodded my head, it was looking to be a Perfect Game, only 17 had been before that, meaning we would be 18 in the whole history of baseball and we were there! It was so so exciting, you could just feel all the energy. When that last pitch was thrown and it was officially the end we jumped up and down and hugged and stayed for fireworks. It was something so magical that even to this day I cannot articulate how amazing it was to be there and to be there with Dan on our first official date. This is such a fun story to tell the kids and when we go to visit Chicago in the summer we always make it a point to go to a White Sox game with them and show them around and sit at our favorite section,

From that day on we spent a lot more time together, hung out every weekend, took the train home together. I started to show him my favorite routes and point out buildings, restaurants, bars, coffee shops I loved and slowly brought him into my world. He introduced me to his friends and family and I started to get to know really know him. I started to see he wasn’t really shy but he really only spoke when he had something important to say and in reality is really thoughtful of what he says to someone (I just talk to hear my voice so this was new to me,) he had the best one liner jokes, he was extremely affectionate, he was genuinely a good person, he was and is everything I am not. I am selfish, I am a baby, I am too mean, too critical, too cold and at times just forget about people and things because I can only think of only myself, but Dan is the opposite. He makes me a better person and even though I hate admitting my mistakes I hate saying sorry, I find myself actually feeling bad and caring when I say something mean to him. My mom likes to point out my flaws a lot and constantly tells me to treat Dan better but she doesn’t realize how much I truly do love and adore him. It scares me to love someone more than myself that isn’t my kids. I grew up having to fight for myself, having to fight to have a say, just always fighting that when it came to love prior to Dan I knew those were all tests. Those prior relationships were really there just to prepare me for this, to appreciate Dan so much that I would never let him go. To put his happiness before mine and to genuinely want to do better for him. I sometimes get annoyed how can I love someone more than me, because I am number one, this is Janet’s World, but in reality this isn’t my world anymore, whereas I am still Queen in it I know I have my King beside me that I don’t mind giving up some power in Janet’s World. I used to wonder how someone so kind, so pure existed and even went to confession asking the priest if this was the Devil’s trick again to fall in love and to hurt again and be alone forever. It was too much to feel this type of love and to feel so happy all the time. I never felt happy every day before Dan. My happiness only came like once a week (if that), happiness was fleeting and I truly thought not made for me because of all the wrong I did in my life. Even now I pinch myself to see if I am living in real world, this is all a lie, this is a ruse, my bubble is going to pop because happiness doesn’t exist especially for someone like me. I thought for sure I would always be alone, I have so many flaws that even I get overwhelmed with myself. When Dan asked for my hand in marriage my mom told me my dad asked Dan if he was sure because I was bat shit crazy LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. But see, this is what I mean how can this be real, but omg it is! It is crazy and very surreal to think about, I am so in love with this man. We have been together now for over a decade and I haven’t driven him away. When we first started dating I used to ask him about his prior relationships, to be nosy but also to hurt myself, he would tell me but over the last couple of years whenever I ask him he says he genuinely doesn’t remember them. I used to think that was a lie, I mean how could you forget. I thought the line he used that he just sees me and I am his everything was just a lie, too cheesy to be real, but no! I recently asked myself the same question trying to remember all the losers I dated and that part of my memory is very foggy, I get flashes and some images but they are momentarily and in their place is Dan, his smile, his giggle, his stares. I see nothing but him, I don’t want anything or anyone but him. He knows all of my secrets, all of my eccentricities, there is nothing left unturned with him. I am still able to surprise him though with some repressed memory that comes up and I tell him, but everything I know of now he knows of and for someone like me that could think that is boring it is actually really comforting and nice. I don’t have to pretend with him, the fake pleasantries, the crazy he sees it all and it shocks me even now. I once watched an episode or was it the movie of Sex and the City where Charlotte says she isn’t happy every minute of every day but everyday she is happy and that struck a chord and that is me. I still get my manic episodes, I am still crazy with my moods but I must admit everyday I am happy (it is weird saying that even now) but I wake up looking forward to what the day brings and spending it with Dan. I love that he always wants to sit next to me, he always wants me to hold his hand, he looks for me every where and when he can’t find me I can see the panic in his eyes. Obviously, our kids have our hearts and are our everything but I love having found my soul mate in life. True love does exist! We aren’t perfect (well maybe Dan jk lololol) but even now when I think about our fights it is mostly me just looking for a fight or my overspending for the month from my allotted amount and even then it is just Dan saying to try to not spend as much the next month. This peacefulness is very odd, but I love it. Maybe that is why I love living in Minnesota, I am far enough from my own crazy family yet close enough to visit often but I can finally breath and relax.

Today, we celebrate 8 years of marriage and even though I hate getting older I love knowing that I have Dan at my side. I love feeling his cool hand in my hot one, love when he whispers in my ear to tell me something silly, even the way he hands me a piece of gum (he kisses my hand) makes my heart flutter. It is so much fun having someone you love with all your heart to share in this adventure of life. I can’t wait to see what new things await ❤

Dan is a big Chelsea fan so when we went to London we visited their stadium and of course bought the cheesy tourist pictures of us with the trophies and the players.
